Privacy Notice

Legal & privacy

Last updated: 21 September 2026

This Privacy Notice explains how Defined Dating, operated by One Pound Apps Ltd, handles personal information when you use our website, mobile application and related support, safety and subscription services. Defined Dating is an adults-only dating service.

1. Who is responsible for your information

One Pound Apps Ltd is the controller for personal information processed for Defined Dating, except where another organisation acts as an independent controller for its own purposes (for example, an app store processing payments under its own terms). Privacy enquiries and data-rights requests can be sent to privacy@defineddating.com. General support enquiries can be sent to support@defineddating.com.

2. Information we collect or receive

Depending on the features you use, we may process:

  • Account and contact data: email address, authentication identifiers, account status and policy acknowledgements.
  • Age and eligibility data: date of birth or age information, 18+ status, age-assurance session/result information and related audit records.
  • Profile data: display name, gender, relationship preferences, biography, interests, values, lifestyle information, appearance or other profile attributes you choose to provide.
  • Special-category data: optional profile fields or preferences may reveal or relate to information such as racial or ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, health or disability information, sexual orientation or sex life. We treat this data with additional care.
  • Photos, videos and media: profile photographs and media you choose to send through the service, subject to our safety and age-gating rules.
  • Location data: a location you enter, an approximate location, or device-provided location when you choose to use location-based features and grant permission.
  • Discovery and interaction data: search filters, likes, matches, blocks, reports, profile views where implemented, and other interactions with the service.
  • Communications: messages and media sent through Defined Dating, and messages you send to support or safety teams.
  • Subscription and entitlement data: product purchased, entitlement status, transaction or purchase token information needed to verify app-store purchases. We do not receive your full payment-card details from the app store.
  • Technical and security data: IP address, device/app information, timestamps, diagnostics, security events, fraud/abuse signals and logs needed to operate and protect the service.
  • Privacy and account administration data: consent records, access or deletion requests, complaint records and account-deletion status.

3. How we use information and our lawful bases

We use personal information only where we have a lawful basis under UK data-protection law. Depending on the purpose, this may include:

  • Contract: creating and operating your account, showing profiles, providing search/discovery, matching, messaging and membership features.
  • Legitimate interests: keeping the service secure, preventing fraud and abuse, improving reliability, handling support, enforcing our Terms and Community Guidelines, and protecting users. We consider the impact on your rights before relying on this basis.
  • Legal obligation: meeting applicable legal, regulatory, accounting, tax, law-enforcement or safety obligations.
  • Consent: where required for optional permissions, non-essential storage/access technologies, direct marketing, or particular processing of sensitive information.

4. Special-category information and sensitive profile data

Dating profiles and preferences can involve sensitive information. Where UK GDPR requires an Article 9 condition, we rely on an appropriate condition, which may include your explicit consent for optional special-category information you choose to provide or use for matching/search. Explicit consent must be specific and separate from general Terms acceptance and may be withdrawn. If the required condition is not available, we will not use that special-category information for the relevant purpose.

You should only add sensitive information that you are comfortable sharing with other users or using within the service. Removing information from your profile stops it being displayed going forward, subject to limited retention described below.

5. Age assurance and 18+ access

Defined Dating is for adults aged 18 or over. We may use a specialist age-assurance provider to help confirm that a user meets the age threshold. Where facial age estimation is used, the provider may process a selfie or short capture and liveness/security signals to estimate whether the person is over the required age. Defined Dating is designed to receive the verification result/status and related session information rather than retain identity documents. If a stronger document-based fallback is offered or required, the relevant screen will explain that process before it begins.

Age-assurance information is used for access control and safety, including restricting protected photo/media messaging until required age checks are satisfied.

6. Matching, search and profiling

Defined Dating lets users choose search filters and profile preferences. The service may calculate compatibility or match indicators from information users provide and the filters they select. These tools are intended to organise and explain potential matches; they do not make legal or similarly significant decisions about you. You remain in control of whom you contact or match with.

7. Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information. We may disclose or make information available to:

  • Other users: profile information, photos and other content you choose to make visible, and content you send to another user.
  • Cloud, database, authentication and storage providers: including Supabase infrastructure used to operate account, database, authentication and storage features.
  • App stores and billing providers: including Google Play, and Apple when an iOS version is offered, to process purchases and verify subscription entitlements.
  • Age-assurance and trust/safety providers: where enabled, to perform age estimation, liveness, fraud or verification checks.
  • Website, security and delivery providers: including Cloudflare for website delivery, DNS, security and related infrastructure.
  • Professional advisers and authorities: where reasonably necessary for legal claims, compliance, fraud prevention, safety, or where required by law.

Our processors are required to handle personal information only on documented instructions and subject to appropriate contractual and security safeguards.

8. International transfers

Some service providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where UK data-protection law requires a transfer safeguard, we use an appropriate mechanism such as UK adequacy regulations, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to approved standard contractual clauses, or another lawful safeguard. We assess transfers and provider safeguards as appropriate.

9. How long we keep information

We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, taking account of safety, legal, dispute and regulatory requirements. Our working retention rules are:

  • active account/profile, matching and message data: while the account is active and as needed to provide the service;
  • account deletion: core account data is scheduled for deletion or anonymisation after a valid deletion request, subject to limited legal/safety retention and backup cycles;
  • backup copies: may persist for a limited period before automatic overwrite and are not used to restore a deleted account except where required for disaster recovery;
  • safety, fraud, block and abuse records: may be retained after account closure where reasonably necessary to prevent harm, repeat abuse, fraud or legal claims;
  • billing and accounting records: retained for the period required by tax, accounting and legal obligations;
  • support and privacy-request records: retained long enough to resolve the request and demonstrate compliance;
  • technical/security logs: retained for a limited period appropriate to security, troubleshooting and abuse prevention.

Where we are required or permitted to retain specific information after deletion, we restrict its use to the reason for which it is retained.

10. Account deletion

You can request account deletion from within Defined Dating. We also provide an external deletion route at defineddating.com/delete-account.html. Account deletion is separate from cancelling an app-store subscription; subscriptions must also be cancelled through the relevant store if you do not want future renewals.

11. Your UK data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to be informed, access your information, correct inaccurate information, request erasure, restrict processing, object to certain processing, receive certain data in portable form, and withdraw consent where processing relies on consent. You may also have rights relating to solely automated decisions where applicable.

To exercise a right, contact privacy@defineddating.com. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

12. Security

We use technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information, including authenticated access, access controls, encrypted network connections, platform security controls, database policies and restricted administrative access. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so users should also protect their credentials and report suspected compromise promptly.

13. Children

Defined Dating is not intended for anyone under 18. We prohibit minors from creating or using dating accounts and maintain standards against child sexual abuse and exploitation. See our Child Safety Standards and Community Guidelines.

14. Cookies and similar technologies

Our website and app may use cookies, local storage, device storage or similar technologies. Strictly necessary technologies may be used without consent where the law allows. We will request consent before using non-essential technologies where consent is required. See our Cookies & Similar Technologies Notice.

15. Marketing

We do not send electronic direct marketing unless we have a lawful basis to do so. Where consent is required, you can withdraw it at any time. Service messages about your account, security, subscriptions or safety are not marketing.

16. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice when our service, providers or legal obligations change. Material changes will be highlighted where appropriate and the date at the top will be updated.
